Mr. Karthik Karuppaiah

Mr. Karuppaiah joined as a Consultant in Kings College Hospital, London, in 2014 following completion of his advance training in shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist surgeries. With the experience, he manages a wide range of orthopaedic conditions affecting the shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist. His clinical expertise is comprehensive evaluation and management of sports injuries, arthritis, nerve and tendon problems in the upperlimb. He also treats multiple injured patients, at Kings College Hospital, one of the busiest Major Trauma Centres in the UK and also provides tertiary referral service for complex upper-limb injuries.


Mr. Karuppaiah had his orthopaedic training in two of the best institutes in the world, namely Kings’ College Hospital, London and Ganga Hospital, India. He was also trained in various hospitals in southeast London and northeast England. He has completed his master’s degrees in orthopaedics, from the Teesside University, UK and Madras Medical College, India. He is also a member & fellow of Royal College of Surgeons. His master’s degree on Evidence Based Medicine in Orthopaedics, fine-tuned his clinical approach to patients to  provide  with best available and up-to-date evidence-based cutting-edge care.


He regularly lectures both nationally and internationally at leading conferences and training courses and continues to teach the modern orthopedic techniques to trainees. He is intensely  involved in teaching and training the trainees from SE Thames Orthopaedic rotation. He is a faculty in Kings FRCS intense revision course, Hand surgery FRCS (Orth) revision course and Medway Upper-limb course and is a clinical and educational supervisor for foundation year and specialty training doctors. He is a keen teacher who teaches orthopaedics to undergraduate students at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical Schools.


He has a brilliant academic career and has published more than 25 articles in peer reviewed indexed journals. He has special interests in upper-limb research and has won several research accolades both at the national and international levels. His research work is cited by numerous authors, journals and orthopedic textbooks. He is a member of the editorial board and is also a reviewer of various international scientific orthopaedic journals.

  • I did my post-graduate training in trauma & Orthopaedics in one of the premier institutes of India (with 5000 beds), which serves as a regional referral centre for a population of 60 million and is a level 1 trauma center.
  • It’s a structured training under the curriculum provided by ‘The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University’ and is recognized by ‘The medical council of India’ to enter into specialist register.
  • The Trauma & Orthopaedic department had ring fenced 340 in-patient beds, nine operating theatres and a separate intensive trauma care unit.
  • The training job involves rotation in various orthopaedic subspecialties (including Spine surgery, Paediatrics and Prosthetics & Orthotics). I also did my basic surgical training (including vascular and plastic surgery) in this job. My training in the first and second year was equivalent to the senior house officer and the third year was of the registrar level.
  • I had 1:4 on-call commitments and gained valuable experience of managing different types of trauma including some not seen in this country.
  • During this period, I published four papers, won two awards, attended eight national conferences and presented nine podium presentations.

  

H. Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship: Feb 2002 – Apr 2003, (Foundation Year 1 level) Stanley Medical College, Chennai, India.

  • This was the compulsory residential rotating internship. I did it in Stanley Medial College Hospital, which is fully equipped 3000 bedded superspeciality hospital. During this period, I rotated through General Medicine, General surgery (including trauma & orthopaedics), Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Community medicine, Paediatrics, Accident and emergency, Ophthalmolgy, Otorhino Laryngology, radiology and anaesthesia.
